Two children in one room: when does it work well?

One room, two children. That can feel lovely — and it can also take some getting used to. It does not have to be perfect at once.

Short answer

There is no set age or room size at which it ‘should’ work. It comes down to three questions: can the sleep rhythms be combined, does each child have a place of their own, and is the room set up safely for the youngest?

What matters

Sleep rhythm

If one child goes to sleep earlier than the other, a fixed order helps. The same quiet evening steps, every evening. That way each child knows when it is their turn.

A place of their own

Even in a small room, each child can have something of their own: a shelf, a lamp, a side of the room. It does not have to take much space, and it makes sharing much easier to explain.

Safety for the youngest

Safety experts advise against letting children under 6 sleep in the top bunk of a bunk bed or in a high sleeper. A fall from a high bed can be dangerous, even after that age.

Check that the top bed has a raised rail on all sides, that there is no gap between the mattress and the rail, and that the ladder is firmly fixed with a handrail up to the top of the bed.

Before you set up the room

  • Measure the room, including the swing of the door and where the window is.
  • Do not let a child under 6 sleep on top or in a high sleeper. Take the ladder to the top bunk away.
  • Decide where the ladder lands, and whether there is clear floor there.
  • Keep a stretch of floor free for play.
  • Give each child a place of their own for their things.

In short

  • Look at sleep rhythm, a place of their own and safety, not only at square metres.
  • Under 6: not in the top bunk or in a high sleeper.
  • Trying is allowed: it is not a choice forever.
